Student Has His Sights Set On a Career as a VJ

Oct 20, 2014

Salvador Thompson has big dreams of turning his passion for hip-hop music into a career using the knowledge that he’s gaining in the radio and television broadcasting program (RTB) at the Lexington Campus.  “I love music. I love hip-hop and everything about it,” Salvador said. “It’s a big part of my life.”

He hopes to build a career similar to that of Fab 5 Freddy, a hip-hop pioneer and filmmaker, who served as the VJ of the first hip-hop music video show ‘Yo! MTV Raps.’ “That’s my dream job--to go around the country and just meet different hip-hop artists,” he explained.

Salvador loves the hands-on experience that he’s getting in his broadcasting classes, and he also has the opportunity to hone his skills during weekly podcasts on on Backtalk14, a show operated by students in the RTB program. His segment, “Talking Hip-Hop with DJ Slab,” airs at 8 p.m. each Tuesday and features discussions about hip-hop artists and the genre.

Salvador also works as a federal work study for the campus where he’s  gaining valuable experience working as a video prompter and setting up video conferencing equipment for various classes. “I also want to direct movies and do other things with RTB ,” Salvador explained of his broad interest in the field.
He feels that the hands-on experience that he’s getting in the RTB program, and the support that he receives from program director Bill Gray and career center director Cheryl Howell have been invaluable to his upcoming career.  “They treat me so well here, I couldn’t ask for anything better,” Salvador said. “They try to help me out as much as possible. I’m forever grateful to them.”

Salvador Thompson, a radio and television broadcasting student at the Lexington Campus, has a passion for hip-hop music and would like to build a career as a VJ.
