Graduate's Temporary Job Leads To Permanent Employment

Jan 20, 2014

Takiesha Black, a recent graduate from the health information management (HIM) program at the Columbus Campus, has achieved a milestone in her career.  While working through Aerotek, a professional staffing agency in Dublin, Ohio, she earned a position with Express Scripts as a prior authorization representative.  Her duties at this job include assisting physicians, pharmacists, and patients in initiating clinical criteria for prior authorization for prescription medication.  A prior authorization is an extra step that insurance companies require before making a decision to cover a medication.  Essentially, the insurance company has decided that it needs more information before deciding if they’ll pay for the medication, and Takiesha’s job at Express Scripts is to assist patients, pharmacists, and physicians who are dealing with insurance companies in this matter.

Takeisha is excelling in this new position, and she credits her education at American National University for enabling her to jump into this new job and perform exceptionally.  “I am already knowledgeable in lots of the information I am learning due to my education in health information [management] at American National University,” said Takeisha.  Furthermore, this latest milestone in her professional life does not signal the end of the road for her.  Takeisha plans to keep working and developing her professional skills and says that her five-year goal is to build a proficient skill set in clinical documentation, policies, rules, and regulations so that she can advance toward becoming a compliance or privacy officer.

Before she graduated, Takeisha served the Licking County branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), to begin a health information technology committee.  Read more about this here:
