Congressional Visit Enlightens Students, Faculty, and Staff

Congressman Phil Roe, MD recently paid a visit to the Bristol Campus, along with his district director and two interns, and spoke to students, faculty, and staff. Congressman Roe is a strong supporter of the Bristol Campus, National College, and career-focused education and has visited several times.

As a physician, Congressman Roe is well acquainted with the vital role that medical assistants, pharmacy technicians, and other allied health professionals play in the delivery of health care. He took the occasion of his visit to share some of his medical experiences with one of instructor Sheri Jesse’s medical assisting classes.

Congressman Roe also visited one of instructor Dennis Anthony’s information technology classes. The wide-ranging discussion included congratulating one of the students for recently completing his CompTia A+ certification, to the role of “the cloud” in modern information technology infrastructure.

Congressman Roe concluded his visit with a frank discussion with faculty and staff members on the importance of career education. The congressman thanked them for their hard work in shaping future generations of East Tennessee’s workforce.

Congressman Roe is a strong supporter of the Bristol Campus, National College, and career-focused education.

A Field Trip that is News Worthy!

A Field Trip that is News Worthy!

Roanoke-based TV news station WDBJ-7 was the destination for students to get the latest local news on a recent June evening. Students from the MBA program at the Roanoke Valley Campus traveled across town to the offices of the local CBS-affiliate to speak with station management about the operations of the station and the future of the TV news business, particularly given the influx of news via social media. Students learned that the station was ranked in the top third of CBS marketing affiliate stations and employed over 100 employees with numerous satellite locations.

During the tour, students got to try their hand at delivering the weather report and met local meteorologist Brent Watts. Students watched and listened as Mr. Watts and the weather team worked to prepare a series of graphs to use for the nightly weather forecast. Mr. Watts was also eager to answer questions from students and was excited to see some had the WDBJ-7 weather app on their phones. He even thanked student Tarek Hourani for his suggestion as to how to improve the weather app.

The station’s transition to a digital HD delivery system a few years ago was of particular interest to the students. Many also commented that they were amazed by the skilled production and sound crews and had gained a deeper appreciation for how dedicated the news team is to work around the clock to deliver the news that the community depends on every day. “The news is more complicated than I thought,” shared student Dhruvi Patel. “I admire the care that goes into its production.”

Medical Center Expands Partnership by Offering to Help Train Students

The Columbus Campus recently presented the American National University Distinguished Community Employer Award to Primary One Medical Center in Columbus. Site manager John Glacken graciously accepted the award on behalf of the medical center. In recent months, Primary One has hired two ANU students—Jasmine Handon, a current medical assisting student, and Marchele Huffman, a recent medical assisting graduate. “I am so happy to have found a potential career with an amazing company,” Jasmine beamed.

Primary One Medical Center provides multidisciplinary care to individuals who may not have full access to health care services, including the homeless population of central Ohio. The medical center firmly believes in cross-training their medical assistants in all areas of the practice, which includes primary care, dental, OB/GYN, pediatric services, and the front office.

“We are truly honored to accept this award. Our experience with American National University students has been nothing but positive,” said Mr. Glacken. Director of health science education Joshua Keslar is also appreciative of the relationship between ANU and Primary One and looks forward to continuing to help fill their employment needs, while embarking on a new opportunity that will help provide hands-on training to students before entering the field. “We are pleased to announce further collaboration with Primary One as an externship site opportunity for future ANU medical assisting students,” Joshua shared.

Former Boatswain’s Mate Sets Sail in Hospitality Management

As a former U.S. Navy boatswain’s mate, Bryan Taylor is no stranger to hard work. After recently graduating from the Florence Campus and being hired as a front desk service representative at LaQuinta Inn, he plans to use that same strong work ethic, along with the knowledge that he gained at American National University, to build a career in hospitality management.

“I think ANU definitely gave me the tools to succeed.”

Bryan had just left the military and relocated back to Northern Kentucky when he first came to ANU. After having studied liberal arts in California, he decided to enroll in the business administration-management program because he wanted to gain concrete skills that he could put right to use in the workforce. “The business management caught my eye,” he recalled. “There’s a broad range of jobs that I could get into with that.”

In his work at LaQuinta, Bryan relies on the technology skills that he gained in his program throughout the day. The “people skills” that his management and communications courses helped him to develop have also been vital as he works to ensure that each of his customers at the hotel have a great experience during their stay. 

Bryan feels that opportunities for advancement are plentiful with LaQuinta and he hopes to impress his employer and one day move into management with the chain. His ultimate goal is to eventually own his own bar and hotel. “I want to be a boss someday--I even want be my own boss,” he shared.  “I think ANU definitely gave me the tools to succeed.”

Eskenazi Health at Forest Manor Provides Externship Opportunities

The Indianapolis Campus recently recognized Eskenazi Health at Forest Manor as a Distinguished Community Employer for providing externships and employment opportunities for ANU students and graduates. Dr. Broderick Rhyant, MD, and Diane Buell, RN, accepted the award on behalf of the Forest Manor Health Center. Since 2012, Eskenazi Health has provided hands-on learning as an externship site for American National University students in the medical assisting program. The practice has also hired three graduates of the program—Davie Bandy, Haissatou Muhammad, and Halima Labo. 

“Eskenazi Health looks for patient advocacy, accountability, responsibility, and professionalism when considering students for externships,” stated Ms. Buell. She further shared that ANU students come well-prepared with the skills required to continue Eskenazi Health’s commitment of excellent, patient-focused care and community resource services. 

“ANU students overall are far above average from students from other programs.”

Eskenazi Health is a multicultural, multi-service health care provider that serves a diverse community of children and families in the local area, allowing medical assisting students and graduates to gain a broad range of hands-on experience. “ANU students overall are far above average from students from other programs, and that’s why they are placed here permanently and others are not,” stated Ms. Buell.

Dr. Rhyant commended American National University for the high quality of professionalism the medical assisting graduates possess when entering the field. “Thank you for producing such a great product,” he said.

Surgical Technology Student Has Her Future in Sight

Surgical Technology Student Has Her Future in Sight

Lexington Campus student Brandi Reyes had chosen a career in elementary education and planned on teaching children in her hometown when, early in her college career, her own first child was born. Brandi put her career on hold so she could help support her family and began working as a certified nursing assistant (CNA), a path which offered immediate work, job security, and a flexible schedule.

After earning her CNA credentials, Brandi began working in the obstetrics department at the local hospital – and the seeds of a new career direction were planted. “I took the CNA training for job security, but I soon realized I had a genuine passion for the medical field,” Brandi explained. “I was trained to assist in obstetric surgery and that opportunity put me on a new career path.”

“I am ready for the challenges and responsibilities, and my training at American National is what I need to excel!”

Having worked for fifteen years as a CNA and developed a love of the surgical field in the process, Brandi decided she wanted to go further with her medical career and started researching educational opportunities in surgical technology. “I found the American National University website, and here I am!” she exclaimed.

The decision turned out to be the right one for Brandi. “American National has proven to be an outstanding choice. The classes are wonderful and so are my instructors,” she stated. “And the personal touch is amazing – everyone is very encouraging.”

In addition to her role as a student, Brandi is also a mother of two, works daily, and commutes over an hour to attend her classes. Her determination and passion are the driving force behind her career path. ”Yes, it’s challenging, but my children are so proud and supportive. My fiancé is behind me 100%. Their support is what pushes me,” she shared. “I know I’m setting an example for my children, also. This career will change all of our lives for the better.”

Following her completion of the surgical technology program, Brandi hopes to continue her training in the field and eventually become a surgical first assistant, a surgical team member who works directly under the surgeon’s guidance and has a more involved role in the surgeries. “This is the career for me,” she said. “I am ready for the challenges and responsibilities, and my training at American National is what I need to excel!”

Willetta Grady – Librarian – Difference Maker

Willetta Grady – Librarian – Difference Maker

Willetta Grady has been the librarian for the Bartlett Campus since 2013. She has more than 20 years of experience in college administration. Willetta holds a Bachelor of Science degree in interdisciplinary studies K-8 and a Master of Education degree in library sciences from Middle Tennessee State University. She was recently elected to the position of recording secretary for the Board of Directors of the Tennessee Library Association. Children's Medical Center Has Hired Five Medical Assisting Graduates

The Martinsville Campus recently presented American National University’s Distinguished Community Employer Award to the Children’s Medical Center in Martinsville. Children’s Medical Center is a structured medical facility specializing in pediatrics and has been serving the Martinsville-Henry County area for over 55 years. The doctors and staff at Children's Medical Center have a mission to provide the best possible health care for children.

“We are happy to have American National University students at our site.”

On June 25, director of health science education Gary Jenkins went to the medical center to present the award to Dr. David Seamon and clinical coordinator Gwendolyn Seamon, in recognition of the facility’s continued support of externship programs and employment opportunities for ANU graduates. “We are happy to have American National University students at our site – they do very well on their clinical rotations, and we hired several externs when they finished,” shared Ms. Seamon.

“We were happy to provide a unique clinical experience the students could not get at other sites, and we are pleased with the community relationship formed with the University,” added Dr. Seamon.

Children’s Medical Center has hired five ANU medical assisting graduates and continues to accept externs with the potential for hire as positions are available.

National College Staff Recognized for Outstanding Contributions

National College Staff Recognized for Outstanding Contributions

Congratulations to Nashville Campus business department chair Glenn Hunter for being chosen as an Educator of Distinction, at the 2015 Tennessee Association of Independent Colleges and Schools (TAICS) annual conference. “Every day I want to deliver the best educational experience for our students to take into the business world,” he commented. “To me, the award means that my students are being prepared to have better professional futures.”    

Glenn has been a general education and business instructor for the Nashville and Madison campuses since 2006 and has served as the business department chair at the Nashville Campus since 2014. During his time at ANU, Glenn developed a business club for the business and accounting students.

He was also a breakout session presenter at the TAICS conference. His session entitled, “Pick Me! – Student Engagement to Maximize Participation,” was well-attended, and several participants commented how useful and relevant the topic was for helping motivate students to strive for academic excellence. 

Two additional faculty members from the Memphis and Bartlett campuses of National College were also named 2015 Educators of Distinction: director of health science education Morris Butcher (Memphis) and director of health care education Yolanda Davis (Bartlett).

"This award is an honor, and I wish to thank everyone who nominated me. I am proud to be part of the National College family.”

"Thanks so very much to TAICS for selecting me as the recipient of the 2015 Educators of Distinction Award; I am both humbled and honored to have been chosen,” Yolanda said of receiving the recognition. “I am grateful to those who nominated/suggested me and to those who supported the nomination. I thank my colleagues, many of whom are just as deserving, for sharing with me. I am grateful to my students who are my incentives for constantly challenging me to continually work toward enhancing my craft. Again, thank you so very much.”

Morris echoed Yolanda’s sentiment, saying, "This award is an honor, and I wish to thank everyone who nominated me. I am proud to be part of the National College family. It is an honor to teach here.”

Also during the conference, the 2015 Dr. John McCurdy Leadership Award was presented to Dr. Cyndee Moore, regional vice president of operations for National College/American National University. She oversees the operations of 16 campuses within Tennessee, Virginia, and Indiana. Cyndee started with National College in 2003 as a campus director of the Danville, Virginia Campus and was promoted to regional director of operations for Tennessee in 2007 and then to vice president in 2010.

The Dr. John McCurdy Leadership Award is presented to an individual whose visionary leadership in or with the independent educational sector has been transformative and has mobilized and unified people, institutions, or causes that improve people’s lives through career education. “Although it is always an honor to be recognized by my peers, this award is particularly meaningful to me in that it is named for and presented by Dr. John McCurdy – a man who I admire and respect tremendously on both a personal and professional basis,” said Cyndee. “I aspire to be as respected and visionary a leader in proprietary education as he has been over the last 25 years in Tennessee.”

Real Life Network Administration

It has been a busy few weeks for Lynchburg Campus students Daniel Paterson and Joseph Short. Learning how to juggle a new career while studying for finals has brought a whole new meaning to time management for the two network administration students who have started out on parallel paths.

Both students chose ANU for its accelerated learning schedule, small class sizes, convenient ease of access to school, and the positive influence in the community. The quality of faculty and staff members at ANU has also been a plus. “Everyone that I have met on the small campus has presented themselves as competent and supportive to students,” Daniel said. “ANU is a small-knit community of people, but together they form a strong and friendly atmosphere and environment to all attending students.”

“I have no doubt that my certifications I have achieved at ANU contributed in a large way for being selected to work the IT HelpDesk.”

They agree the courses they’ve taken in the network administration program at ANU have also been helpful, as well as the program’s focus on earning industry-recognized credentials, such as the CompTIA A+ and Network Pro certifications they have both achieved. “The classes here have helped by introducing me to the applications and concepts needed for an entry level position in IT,” stated Joseph. “The Implementing and Troubleshooting Operation Systems Technology and the Computer Hardware Technology classes have been most helpful so far, as these classes cover many of the basics of IT and computers,” added Daniel. “This knowledge goes a long way when working on an IT HelpDesk.”

That is knowledge they will need, as both Daniel and Joseph have recently obtained positions as remote support specialists on the IT HelpDesk at Liberty University. “The extensive knowledge that I have acquired in the relatively short amount of time that I have been attending ANU has been beneficial to me,” said Daniel. “I have no doubt that my certifications I have achieved at ANU contributed in a large way for being selected to work the IT HelpDesk at Liberty University, which is an incredible opportunity and a great way to be introduced to my current field in the real world. I'm confident that as I obtain more certifications, they will no doubt continue to contribute to my advancement in my chosen field: network administration.”

In their new jobs, Daniel and Joseph are responsible for answering calls from users on-campus and across the world, remotely connecting to their workstations, and assisting with software support, among other duties. “It's an enjoyable position and a fantastic opportunity for entry level IT students to break into the field and obtain some valuable real world and work experience,” explained Daniel. “I am thoroughly grateful to have been granted the opportunity.”

Business Student Advanced Into Management at Local Grocery

Using the business skills that he’s developing in his business administration-management program at the Danville, Kentucky Campus, Phillip Walker recently advanced into a management position at Durham’s Grocery.

Phillip started out as a grocery bagger at Durham’s and then moved into jobs in the deli and meat departments when his twin sister, Phillis Walker, a graduate of American National University, encouraged him to enroll at ANU. “I’ve always been a people person, and everybody said they could see me being a boss one day,” he recalled. “I could see me running my own company one day, so I said ‘I guess I’ll go and get my degree.’”

“I love that the classes are so small [because] I pay more attention and get hands-on with the teachers.”

As a student at ANU, Phillip finds he’s gaining business skills that he can apply to his work at the grocery store each day. “These management classes have really helped me out a lot,” he said.  “I love that the classes are so small [because] I pay more attention and get hands-on with the teachers.”

After gaining experience in management at Durham’s and earning his degree, Phillip hopes to eventually open a grocery store of his own.

Graduate Celebrates Degree, Award, and Career in Health Care

After earning high honors in the medical assisting program at the Richmond Campus, Jessica Green’s academic excellence was recently recognized when she was presented with the E.M. Coulter Award during the campus’s graduation ceremony. The award is icing on the cake for Jessica who, in addition to earning her degree, has moved from a minimum wage job to a career in health care using the training that she gained at ANU. “I was working in fast food, and now I’m an RMA (registered medical assistant) at Richmond Women’s Health—and I love it,” she said.

Jessica first came to ANU determined to make a better life for her son. “I did a lot of research and [I saw that] ANU had the small classes, one-on-one with the teachers, and after school tutoring. That’s what I loved about it,” she recalled.

An externship in a local urgent care, gaining certification as an RMA while in her program, and  job search assistance from career center director Cynthia Hansel, also helped to ensure her career success. Cynthia sent Jessica’s résumé to Richmond Women’s Health when the practice’s clinical manager, Heather Patrick, who is also an ANU graduate, contacted the campus to find qualified candidates for the opening in her office. As an RMA, Jessica helps triage patients, takes their vitals, and assists the doctor during his examinations. Her favorite part of her job is helping to care for expectant mothers, and she loves working alongside her wonderful coworkers on the Richmond Women’s Health team. “All the girls here are really sweet, and they have helped me learn a lot since I graduated,” she stated.

Student Inspires Two Others to Enroll at ANU

When Brittany Hook enrolled in the medical assisting program at the Pikeville Campus, little did she know that her determination to find a better paying career would inspire her fiancé, Austin McNeil, and his mother, Cristal Dawson, to do the same. 

When Austin moved back to Pikeville from Northern Indiana, where he worked on the assembly line of a Toyota plant, Brittany felt that is was the perfect time for him to finish his education, and she encouraged him to enroll at ANU. “Everybody is always going to need somebody in the medical field,” Austin said of his decision to enroll in the medical assisting program. “I don’t have to worry about getting laid off or losing my job.”

“You don't have to take a lot of classes that you don't need; you're in, you're out, and you're done.”

Austin’s mother, Cristal, worked as a CNA for many years and once enrolled at a local community college with the goal of entering its nursing program, but she grew frustrated when she was kept on a waiting list for several semesters. “I felt like I was wasting my time,” she recalled.

When Brittany told Cristal about the small class size at ANU and that she could go straight into the medical assisting program, Cristal enrolled, as well. “You don’t have to take a lot of classes that you don’t need,” Cristal explained of why ANU appealed to her. “You’re in, you’re out, and you’re done.”

Now, as students at ANU, Brittany, Austin, and Cristal provide support to one another, and they’ve even had a few classes together. Thanks to the legacy of education that Brittany passed along to them, they look forward to enjoying a brighter future for themselves and their family for many years to come.
