Clubs and Organizations
The spirit of togetherness is also evident in the work of National’s various clubs and organizations through which our students pool their talents in service to one another and the community at large.
The clubs and organizations listed below represent a sampling of the many opportunities for social and civic involvement available at National College
Toastmasters
Founded in 1924 at the YMCA in Santa Monica, California, Toastmasters has become a world leader in helping people gain confidence and acquire effective public speaking skills. Today, the organization operates in 90 countries with 220,000 members worldwide.
Through its many local chapters (11,300 in all), Toastmasters provides a forum where its members hone communication skills and build professionalism.
NCITE
National's Roanoke Valley Campus is home to the National College Information Technology Engineers club (NCITE).
Created by and for students pursuing degrees in information technology, this organization is open to those interested in building computers, designing web sites, creating databases, or writing programs. "We play with some pretty cool toys, too" adds, club sponsor and Information Technology Chairperson, Matthew Poole.
Medical Careers Club
Founded in October 2004 at National's Harrisonburg campus, the Medical Careers Club sponsors programs that serve the community and also support the efforts of the college's various medical programs.
The club raised money to aid victims of Hurricane Katrina; a local church matched these funds for a combined contribution of $3,000. The club has also partnered with the Patch Adams Foundation, collecting shoes for the children of a poverty-stricken community in Belize. Through its various fund raising efforts, the club has purchased medical equipment which it generously donated to the college for use in its medical labs.
Campus Civitan Club
National's Knoxville campus is home to an organization that sets a new standard for service-oriented groups. The club has worked with the Salvation Army, stuffing 100 stockings to be distributed to underprivileged citizens during the holidays. The group also participates in the fund raising efforts of Relay for Life and the American Heart Association. The club partners with the US Marine Corps in its annual Toys for Tots campaign, has gathered items to be shipped to soldiers serving in Iraq, and routinely conducts food drives to benefit local charities.
Phi Beta Lambda (Lexington, KY Campus)
Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) is the only active club at the Lexington campus that is chartered by both national (www.fbla-pbl.org) and state (www.kypbl.org) organizations. Phi Beta Lambda is a club open to all students of any major who are interested in furthering their first hand knowledge of the business sector. All types of businesses are toured and many speakers of various backgrounds are invited to speak at their meetings.
Society for Human Resource Management (Lexington KY Campus)
SHRM is committed to advancing the human resource profession to ensure that HR is an essential and effective partner in developing and executing organizational strategy. Anyone who is interested in any human resources related field, or would like to obtain more information regarding the HR field is welcome to become a member.

Wordsmiths (Lexington KY Campus)
The Wordsmiths club of the Lexington Campus of National College celebrates poetry (of all types including haiku and non-rhyming), short stories, and novels written by our students and faculty. They also honor creative speakers of various forms, whether they read poems or sing Karaoke.
The Wordsmiths began a tradition in 2006 at graduation by compiling the writings of anyone who wanted to participate and creating a booklet of the writings to give to the graduates and their families.
Anyone can join the Wordsmiths. The only request is that you have a genuine interest in writing or creative speaking and come to listen. We want everyone to enjoy themselves and show off their writing or speaking talents.

Fantasy Book Club (Lexington, KY Campus)
Fantasy Book Club is a group of students and staff that meet monthly to discuss the latest fantasy, science fiction and/or horror books.
The Fantasy Book Club attend local book signings as well as the Festival of Book Annual Events. They also coordinate many community events. Recent activities include the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallow Book Release Party and a local gaming night. They are currently planning a book release event in August for the final book in the Twilight Series titled “Breaking Dawn” by Stephenie Meyer.
