Occupational Snapshot: Software Developer

Sep 13, 2013

Every time you put a disc in your computer or type up a term paper using a word processing program, you have a software developer to thank. They design applications that allow users to complete tasks on computers or create underlying systems that run devices or control networks. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics at the U.S Department of Labor, increased demand for software will fuel 30% growth in the field through 2020, higher than most occupations.

Most software developers work for computer systems design firms or software publishers. Some work for companies that manufacture computers and other electronics. Most work at least full time. About one-fourth of software developers worked more than 40 hours a week in 2010.

Software developers design, test, and develop software or applications to meet users’ needs. They may also need to instruct programmers how to write the code for the software and ensure it functions properly through its life.
