Graduate Shares Entrepreneurial Success with Management Students

Dec 10, 2012

Sam Shumate, a graduate from the business administration-management program at the Bristol Campus, turned his hobby of remote controlled cars into a successful business. He created a business plan, rented a space in the Bristol Mall, and opened a new business named Renegade R/C. He sells remote controlled cars, trucks, boats, helicopters, and planes in the store as well as online. Renegade R/C also services broken vehicles and sells parts. Currently, he is also working on creating the only indoor remote control race track in the country located right outside his store in the mall corridor. He said business is good and he already has plans to expand.

Sam said his education at National helped him with this successful business venture. “The marketing classes were very beneficial as well as the management class where one of our assignments was to develop a business plan,” he explained.

Instructor Jonathon Worley was so impressed with Sam’s business that he thought his current students in the Principles of Management class could learn a lot from his example. They visited Sam’s store and listened as he explained the importance of a creative business plan, a target customer base, a solid marketing plan, and hiring good staff members.

Sam Shumate is pictured speaking to fellow National College students about his business.
