Graduate Proves "I Can Do Anything I Set My Mind To"

Jun 01, 2012

Someone once told Katherine Johnson that she was too old to get a college education and that it had been too long since she was in school. But she proved them wrong.

It was late 2009 when Katherine Johnson decided she needed a change. She had been working in the fast food industry when she enrolled in the Bristol Campus’s medical billing and coding program. “I wanted to better my life and to find a job that was more than just flipping burgers. I wanted a challenge.” Nervous at first, Katherine worked hard to prove her skeptics wrong and completed the program with a 4.0 grade point average. She did so well that after she finished her program in November 2010, she decided to re-enroll. This time she chose to study the medical office specialist program to gain more knowledge in medical office operations. “The instructors were great,” she said, “Especially [Michelle] Kyte; she was really concerned about her students’ success.”

In May of 2012 at the Bristol Campus graduation, Katherine walked across the stage for the second time. She received the Mary P. McGurn Award for high academic achievement. In addition to her outstanding academic accomplishments, Katherine has found success with a new career as a medical office assistant at Holston Regional Comprehensive Care where she will be using her new skills in medical office procedures as well as medical coding. She said, “I learned a lot academically but most of all I learned so much about myself. I can do anything I set my mind to.”
