Ambition = New Career

“I feel very prepared to work in a pharmacy thanks to my instructors at National College,” said Youngstown student Valerie Smith who is planning to graduate from the pharmacy technology degree program in November. She is an energetic and highly motivated individual taking care of five children while attending school full-time and getting almost straight A’s. She likes everything about National College and has recommended the school to many people including Kathy McQueen, a new student in the medical assisting degree program.
Valerie said that all of the instructors in the pharmacy technology program are very informative teaching her not only information on dispensing medications but also how to handle disgruntled, sometimes hostile, customers. She is currently completing an externship at a local Rite Aid store but hopes to gain employment in a hospital setting. This ambitious student wants to return to National after graduation and enter the surgical technology degree program, making her more marketable to a large institution. When asked about her motivation to attain her high GPA, Valerie said, “You can’t have C’s and D’s and expect a good job.” Department Chair Janet Potts enjoys having Valerie in class and says that she is a “very serious” student who is eager to learn. “She always digs deeper into the information that is presented to her,” Janet explained.
