The Capital Club

At the beginning of the spring term, Career Center Directors Jamie Jackson and Evon Cavelli of the Youngstown Campus started "The Capital Club."
Geared towards business majors and those wanting to become entrepreneurs, all students are invited to attend the club's weekly meeting. The club offers its members assistance with creating marketing, business, and financial plans. In addition, various guest speakers are planned including Jim Rowlands, Director of the REACH Project of the Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber of Commerce, in April. The REACH Project provides entrepreneurs with assistance as they pursue ideas for starting or expanding a business.
Capital Club discussions cover such topics as professionalism in the workplace; role playing of uncomfortable work situations; mock interviews; and success stories, as well as plans for the future. Field trips will be part of the club's activities as well as organizational breakfasts, lunches, and dinners.
Michael Gregory, a student in the business administration-management degree program, is a member of the Capital Club. He has been thinking about starting a business of his own for some time with inspiration from his mother who had her own industrial and residential cleaning business. He wants to reconfigure common products to make them more comfortable and practical for left-handed people. Some examples of these products are re-designed snow shovels and scissors.
Michael did some research on the school before enrolling and learned that the campus's job placement rate far exceeds similar colleges in the area. He really enjoys his classes and also enjoys the interactive quality of the class work as the instructors always encourage student participation. He currently has Instructor Cindy Castor for the Microsoft Office class and is delighted that she is structuring assignments and the final exam towards students who would like to own a business some day or work for a particular company.
Michael is motivated by the Capital Club. He thoroughly enjoyed a debate that the club recently hosted on the topic of using Ohio Lottery funds for education. He hopes that the Club sponsors more debates and looks forward to upcoming guest speakers and future programs.
