Externship Success

Dr. J. Britten Shroyer, an orthopedic surgeon at Marymount Hospital in Cleveland, recently praised surgical technology student Ashley Traina (pictured) after performing a "hip nailing" surgery: "She did an excellent job...it was her first one but she was totally on the ball, and she kept up with me." Praises also came from MaryBeth Houlahan, Operations Manager of Perioperative Services at the hospital, to Clinical Coordinator Lisa Stoutemire and Surgical Technology Director Debbie Romeo for "preparing such fine quality future members of the health care field."
Ashley has been working at Marymount Hospital since the start of the fall term last September for her externship. She has assisted in many types of surgery and she said her favorite is orthopedic. She is now planning to specialize in this field. She said orthopedics is very difficult but she enjoys the challenge.
Ashley's training at National was very intense and demanding but is exactly what is needed for the job. She said, "You can't be lazy, you must have willpower and don't expect anything to be handed to you." She went on to say that with this experience, she agrees with her instructor, Lisa, that surgical technology is "definitely a field in which you must know exactly what you are doing at all times." She has learned the importance of adopting a professional attitude and being prepared for anything that can happen in the operating room. Ashley is preparing to graduate at the end of February and thanks to the externship, she is confident that she is ready to start her career as a surgical technologist.
