Voter Registration Drive

The Roanoke Valley campus Student Activities Council (SAC) held a voter registration drive on campus this week, Monday through Thursday, in conjunction with Constitution Week. Faculty members and SAC members staffed a table for four hour-long time slots each of those four days, encouraging students and staff to register for the election on November 4th. The campaign has registered over 70 first-time voters and other voters whose registration needed to be renewed due to factors such as change of address.
The official State Board of Elections forms were used. In addition SAC members distributed a voter card with tips on preparing to vote and on what to do on Election Day at the polls. Additionally, students were given a Constitution Day brochure that included a foreword by College President Frank Longaker, a pocket copy of the Constitution, and other helpful information.
On Tuesday, September 16th, cake and punch were served in the Eagles Nest Café in celebration of Constitution Week. Also on the 16th, librarian Betty Johnson (pictured; right) and student Todd Musick (pictured left) dressed up as Lady Liberty and Uncle Sam to attract the attention of the campus and encourage people to register. SAC members Cynthia Adams, Susan Austin, David Burnette, Stephanie Einhellig, Christy Hensley, Kristi Mengerink, Todd Musick and Felicia Nance staffed the registration table, along with faculty members Betty Johnson, Matt Poole and Ken Redheffer and Dean of Faculty/SAC Advisor Peter Wonson. The registration drive was a great success, and SAC is thrilled that we could assist so many students in preparing to participate in our democratic political process.
