Flight Management

Annette Chamberlin's Master of Business Administration students recently spent one of their Thursday evening Operations Management classes observing the operations of a very top level security group -- the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Air Traffic Controllers.
The graduate students toured the Roanoke area FAA facility on March 20th and watched the air traffic controllers conduct overflight operations.
Participants learned that the FAA defines an "operation" as a departure, arrival, or overflight of an aircraft. According to FAA Controller Mark Chamberlin, FAA facilities across the nation are ranked, along with terrain considerations, based on the number of completed operations. Besides learning a great deal about the FAA's operations and management, students also were treated to Roanoke's best view from the FAA Tower, which stands 200 feet tall and overlooks the entire Roanoke Valley and surrounding area. The view was truly amazing, and the fact that the controllers hung a full moon in the sky made the field trip even nicer.
