Helping the Life Saving Crew

Students in the Master of Business Administration program at the Roanoke Valley Campus have been busy working with the Roanoke Emergency Medical Services (REMS) organization - the first all volunteer life-saving crew in the world. The organization originated in 1882 when concerned citizens, businessmen, and the Norfolk and Western Railroad started to operate horse-drawn equipment in downtown Roanoke.
Earlier this year, REMS asked the MBA students to provide financial advice and marketing direction as the economy was constricting its budget. Students were eager to assist and apply what they were learning in the classroom. During the past two terms, they have come up with ideas on budgeting, organizational strategy, and marketing. They will present their final plans to the REMS board the second week of November.
MBA student Erin Marley (pictured center, behind the check) was so enthusiastic about the REMS project that she enlisted her employer, Liberty Medical, to partner with National College and assist REMS. As a result, her employer made a $1,000 donation to REMS and agreed to organize a major marketing event recommended by the students.
