Healthy Fun Fair

The Pikeville Campus held its 2nd Annual Healthy Fun Fair on July 30th, as local health organizations were on hand to provide free health screenings to students, graduates, and the general public. Glucose monitoring, vital signs, and age revealing derma scans were among the many services available as the hallways were filled with hundreds of attendees waiting in line for osteopathic manipulation, vision screenings, and even DNA fingerprinting kits for the kids.
The fair was themed with a carnival-like atmosphere and offered participants hotdogs, sno-cones, cotton candy, face-painting and balloons. Pikeville Campus nursing students and medical assisting students volunteered their efforts performing cholesterol checks while several other attending students helped with various planned activities for the day.
Information tables from Hospice of the Bluegrass, Habitat for Humanity Women's Build, Pike County Health Department, Premier Home Care, Pikeville City Police Department, YMCA, Pike County Cooperative Extension Office, Wal-Mart Vision Center, and the Social Security Administration were set up in order to answer questions and provide resource materials as requested. Dr. Randy Litman of the Pikeville College Osteopathic School of Medicine brought his team of medical students to share their knowledge and administer preventive care as well. The Pike County Health Department's mobile unit was on display for tours and viewing. Under a large tent outside, Pikeville Medical Center had a group of staff members present taking blood pressure readings, measuring oxygen saturation levels, and promoting stroke awareness.
Towards the end of the afternoon, a fire and safety demonstration from the Coal Run Village Fire Department of Pikeville was presented. Emergency medical technicians from DHP Ambulance were also available to answer emergency related questions during the fair. The Pikeville Campus was also glad to have National College Vice President Charlotte Brinneman in attendance for the special event. Not only was this an exciting opportunity to receive free healthcare but a great chance to network and seek out job opportunities with potential employers for National College students and graduates!
