A Healthy Representation

Connecting with the business community, the Pikeville Campus participated in the Appalachian Wireless Health Fair held on November 10th. Local hospitals, educational institutions, health and wellness facilities and medical supply companies assembled together providing free health care information and services to employees and the general public. Instructor Mary Collins, RN represented the College at the event and administered free cholesterol screenings. She also tested hemoglobin levels and answered questions about high blood pressure and the possible causes for elevated cholesterol readings. Career Center Director Donna Dye also attended and talked with the crowd about the benefits of the College’s career center as individuals signed up to be contacted requesting more information about the programs they were interested in.
Response was overwhelming as employees from the communications company stood in line for flu-shots; nutritional advice and resource material on various related health topics ranging from skin care to maintaining a healthy heart. At closing, the Pikeville Campus received a certificate of appreciation from Appalachian Wireless recognizing the Campus’s contribution to the successful event. Other local businesses who participated were as follows: Pikeville Medical Center; Highlands Regional Hospital; McDowell ARH; Floyd County Health Dept.; Carl D. Perkins Rehab. Center; “A” Natural Health Center; Premier Health Home Care; Pike County Extension Service; Cintas; and the World of Wellness.
