National College's educational programs came to the coal-rich Eastern Kentucky region in 1975. Banking is also important to the local economy, and graduates have found success in these and other business and technical fields. Preparation for medical careers also draws students from throughout the region, including adjacent areas of Virginia and West Virginia, to prepare for their chosen career field.
In 2005, the campus moved to a newly constructed, 11,358 square foot facility built at a cost of $3 million

A Healthy Fun Fair

On July 17, the Pikeville Campus presented their 1st Annual Healthy Fun Fair. The fun-filled afternoon featured a carnival-like atmosphere complete with balloons, face-painting, hotdogs, soft drinks, snow cones, and games! With hundreds in attendance, the crowd enjoyed a chance to “spin the wheel” for prizes, while a live radio remote was broadcast from the campus. The admission for the fair and all refreshments were free to everyone and provided all attendees with important health information and services.
Local medical facilities and National College health care students conducted screenings assessing blood pressure, glucose levels, skin damage, vision, and cholesterol readings. Consultations were also available on topics such as weight loss, personal training, smoking cessation and healthy training. The Health Fair also provided an introduction to the new associate degree in nursing program that will begin during the fall term on the Pikeville Campus. The response has been tremendous!
The fair generated so much interest in the new program, the first in nursing at any National College campus, that 35 nursing applications were submitted that day.
There were many local businesses which participated in the fair as well. They included: the Pike County Extension Office, Wal-Mart Vision Center, Premier Home Care, Dr. Greg Hackney, Dr. Barb Williams, Habitat for Humanity Women’s Build, Social Security Administration, Pikeville Medical Center, Unite Pike, Curves, Floyd Co. Health Dept., Pike Co. Health Dept., YMCA, Burlap and Silk, DHP Ambulance, and Ghostbusters Tanning. The campus gained wide recognition from the local news media as well. WYMT, East Kentucky Broadcasting and The Medical Leader all reported from the campus. WYMT even recognized the successful event on the morning and evening news broadcast! Sponsors for the 1st Annual Healthy Fun Fair included SouthEast Telephone, Pepsi, Coca-Cola, and Heiner’s. Special thanks to Kelly Clark, the Pikeville Campus Community Resource Coordinator, for her outstanding efforts during the fair and her dedication to National College and the business community within the Pikeville area. Additional thanks to Rita Thacker, Administrative Assistant; and Misty Ramey, Student Services Representative, for playing a vital role in the preparation and planning of the fair. Campus Director Tammy Riley and staff would like to thank everyone who participated, donated or contributed their time to this truly exciting and successful event. Hope to see you next year!
