IT Careers Workshop

On August 3, the Lynchburg Campus held a workshop for information systems engineering students. Ben Clark (at right), VP and Chief Information Officer at Centra Health, began with an overview of the Centra information technology (IT) organization and a discussion of the various IT careers available at Centra including network engineer, server engineer, help desk support, and desktop support. He described the job responsibilities of each career within his organization and the level of experience needed to obtain and perform each job. He also discussed Centra's use of thin client, virtualization, storage area networks (SAN), and wireless technologies. He emphasized the importance of acquiring technical IT certifications such as A+, MCSE/MCITP, CCNA and CISSP. He concluded his discussion by giving students a few tips on how to get a job as an IT professional. He told the students that in addition to being technically proficient, the "soft skills" - being able to communicate, being well-read, and "esprit de corps" - being a team player -- are extremely important skills for the IT professional.
