Molecular Models
A railroad tanker recently leaked dangerous chemicals causing a scare in the industrial community called Rubbertown and Louisville Instructor Ted Bickel saw this as a learning opportunity. He brought in a molecular model kit for students in his Environmental Science class and had them create the chemical compounds, methyl methacrylate and ethyl acrylate, that leaked and caused the unsafe conditions. The class was also given material safety data sheets to study the effects of these chemicals on humans and the local ecosystem. Ted often incorporates learning materials in his classroom, giving students hands-on learning in both his math and environmental science classes. (The chemical leak was quickly brought under control by firefighters and the area was deemed safe.)
Student Claudia Johnson is pictured working on her molecular model assignment.
