Political Project

Instructor Angela Jones (left) challenged her students in the Medicare and Medical Reimbursement class with a “political” project. Students were asked to research the prospective presidential candidates’ healthcare reform proposals and prepare an argument for and/or against the proposals. The class divided into two teams. They drew cards to select which team to be on, so some were on the opposite side of their own political views. The areas they covered in their research included: prescription plans, mental health care, and health care coverage for children, veterans, and patients on Medicare and disability. The class spent many weeks researching both political candidates’ views in order to be well versed on both sides to counter the other side’s points. The main idea of the project was to get the students to think outside of the box and look at the candidates to see how healthcare reform will affect not only their lives but their careers.
The students did an exceptional job in learning and presenting their candidate’s viewpoints healthcare reform proposals. Both sides indicated that as a result of this project they were more aware of needing to check out both candidates’ other issues before they make their final decisions on who they will vote for in November.
