A Creative New Career

One of Yvonne Headrick's great strengths is patience. It's an essential element to being a web-designer student. Not only does she have to have patience while working with the intricacies of the computer world, but Yvonne shares how a lot of people miss that computer work, and especially web design, requires her to be in constant dialogue with clientele. However, it's something Yvonne has always enjoyed: "I always knew I wanted to do something in computers, I didn't know what -- I just wanted to do something," she says.
It wasn't until she came to the Indianapolis Campus that Yvonne finally got some direction to start on that career in computers. Before enrolling, Yvonne worked a multitude of jobs from front desk reception to driving fork-lifts in a warehouse. Although all of the jobs were worthwhile, nothing gave her the thrill the way her web design classes have: "I like it -- it's fun because you can be very creative," she says, which is something not a lot of people tend to associate with the computer world. In fact, it was a bit of a surprise to Yvonne when she discovered how much she enjoyed being creative on computers.
When Yvonne first enrolled at National she was pursuing a degree from the information systems engineering (ISE) program. When she took a class in Visual Basic with Michael Jefferson, Director of Information Technology, she absolutely loved it. Michael suggested that she might be interested in the web design program. For Yvonne, it was the natural fit. She switched degrees and started to focus on web design. "I love [web design]. I really do," Yvonne says with a smile, and though she plans on completing her ISE degree, "[web design] is going to be the one - the main thing - that I'd really like to do," she states.
Five to ten years from now, Yvonne would like to have her two degrees (web design and ISE) and eventually open her own small business doing one or the other, or even both. "[Getting both degrees] gives me double what I can do," she shares, and they are two degrees whose skill sets obviously strengthen each other. Not only will her training in both broaden her future prospects for opening her own business, it also gives her a competitive advantage in finding a job after graduation.
