National Medical Assistants Week

Last week the Dayton Area Campus celebrated National Medical Assistants Week with the theme “Taking the Pulse of our Nation.” Director of Health Care Education Grace Haines and health care instructors put together a well organized event that encompassed the whole week. Each day the Medical Assisting program had an activity and in the spirit of sharing and making others more aware of the program, the medical assisting students reached out to all other students and encouraged the participation of everyone.
On Monday, a kick-off and cook-out was held for all students to meet and greet. On Tuesday, guest speakers were scheduled at different times talking about various health care subjects. Participants enjoyed an open fruit and salad bar. On Wednesday, medical assisting students participated in a medical terminology spell-off with box lunches provided. On Thursday, the department had a health clinic day providing health screenings, flu vaccines, and a breast cancer awareness lecture. On Friday, the group organized a pancake brunch and offered some closing thoughts.
The highlight of the week’s activities turned out to be the spelling contest. It had everyone involved and people cheering for their favorite speller. The winners for the day and evening classes respectively were: Tosha Browning, a pharmacy tech student, and Melissa Jackson, a medical assisting student. The winning words were phlegm and atherosclerosis. This activity was such a big hit that Grace plans to have a contest each term.
