A Grand Day for the Grand Old Flag

Thursday, August 7, was a beautiful day in the city of Cincinnati and a great setting for the much-anticipated dedication of the Cincinnati Campus’s new 80’ flagpole and 20’x30’ American flag. Students, faculty, staff, and representatives of the community enjoyed a stirring ceremony while paying tribute to military men and women, past, present, and future.
A campus wide committee chaired by Director of Information Technology Programs Jim Cunningham and Community Resource Coordinator Jim Clark, who also served as master of ceremonies, planned the ceremony over several months. Campus Director Tom Jefferson spoke briefly about all the “behind-the-scenes” work that went into the construction of the flagpole and preparation for the ceremony. Other speakers included Jodi Inabnitt of the Greater Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce, who expressed appreciation for the College’s commitment to developing traits of good citizenship and community involvement among students; and campus favorite, instructor Simon Perkins, PhD who delivered a stirring recollection of his military service during the Korean War which he used to show students how they could achieve success if they refused to let anyone or anything slow them down on their quest for education. The highlight of the ceremony was the raising of the new 20’x30’ US flags by soldiers of Ohio Army National Guard’s 216th Engineer Battalion and 1st Battalion, 174th Air Defense Artillery Regiment. The Guardsmen from the armory in nearby Woodlawn soon had Old Glory flying proudly in the summer wind as they performed with military bearing and precision.
Instructor and 35-year military veteran Larry Lusby played the bugle during the ceremony, while student Dante Melson led the crowd of more than 100 in the Pledge of Allegiance. A photographer from the Cincinnati Enquirer and video crews from two local TV news programs were present to document the ceremony as well. After the ceremony, representatives from the National Guard presented the Cincinnati Campus with a certificate of appreciation for the college’s work in support of veterans education.
