Insightful Guest Speakers

Bluefield Campus Instructor Lucille Sisk didn’t have far to look for a guest speaker for the Calculations and Administration of Medications classes. Her husband, Robert Sisk (pictured right), was the perfect match! Mr. Sisk has 25 years experience as a paramedic and is also a cancer survivor. He was able to speak to students with a perspective from “both sides of the needle.” He explained how dosages are calculated and delivered in emergency situations on ambulances. He also gave insight into how the patient feels when medications are being administered. In addition, he offered different approaches to dealing with
different patients.
Instructor Jackie Smith recruited cancer survivor Trevis Law (left) to talk to students in the Anatomy and Physiology class. Trevis is currently in remission from Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (ALL) and is a recipient of a bone marrow transplant. He spoke to the class about his experiences with the transplant, chemotherapy, and radiation. He also spoke about how hope and a positive attitude can affect a patient’s outcome. His talk inspired the class as they prepared to go into the world to meet patients.
