Zoo Accounting

Accounting students at the Akron Area Campus recently visited the Akron Zoo for a presentation on how the zoo accounts for their finances. Norman Katz, business chair and recent recipient of the College’s Distinguished Teaching Award, arranged the field trip to give students an understanding of not-for-profit accounting. It was an eye opening experience since they learned that there is a lot more that goes on behind the scenes at a zoo than one can imagine. For example, some zoos do not actually own all of the animals, most of them are on loan from a national organization. The students were impressed with the efficient systems in place to help care for the animals and thoroughly enjoyed the presentation.
