Overcoming Challenges

johnson Stephanie Johnson, administrative office assistant for Big Brothers & Big Sisters of the Bluegrass, knows the challenges of life as a single parent. As a single mother of two children, it’s especially rewarding to her to work for an organization like Big Brothers & Big Sisters that is dedicated to creating supportive relationships for single-parent children.

A graduate of the Lexington Campus with an associate degree from the Administrative Office Professional program, Stephanie credits National’s individualized approach and caring faculty and staff for allowing her to complete her education. She said, “I really enjoyed [National]; I almost didn’t want to graduate so I could stay!”

Campus staff worked with Stephanie to secure a Federal work-study position for her when she became pregnant with her second child while in school and could not continue in her previous job; and her instructors even helped her reschedule her exams around her childbirth, allowing her to maintain her 4.0 GPA.

“Her skills really came through in her [employment] interview,” says Stephanie’s supervisor, Office Manager Dianna Sergeant. “She has proven to be a good employee…we want to keep her for a long time.”
